Brooklyn-based singer, songwriter and composer Sheherazaad has announced a new album, Qasr, which will be out March 1 via Erased Tapes. It was produced by Arooj Aftab and the title means “castle” or “fortress” in Urdu.
There are two songs you can listen to now: “Mashoor,” a delicate, atmospheric folk song, and then the more expansive, cinematic “Dhjund Lo Mujhe.” As to the latter, Sheherazaad says, “For me, it brings up this circus of the insane, carnival of the unhappy. It suggests a very specific insanity, that of the immigrant experience. There is implied bloodshed, glamour, hallucination, and schizophrenia.” You can watch the “Mashoor” video and listen to “Dhjund Lo Mujhe” below.
Sheherazaad has upcoming release shows in Brooklyn (March 18 at First Unitarian Congregational Society) and San Francisco (March 28 at The Lab), and both are with Japanese artist Hatis Noit.
