Sleater-Kinney are back with “Say It Like You Mean It,” another sample of their upcoming studio album Little Rope. The song also arrives with an accompanying music video starring Succession actor J. Smith-Cameron.
“Say It Like You Mean It” sees a more romantic side of Sleater-Kinney, driven by an almost pompous drum beat. It ruminates on the dissolution of a romantic relationship, and the frustration that arises when your ex-to-be just won’t give you a clean break: “Say it like you mean it/ I need to hear it before you go/ Say it like you mean it/ This goodbye hurts when you go,” Corin Tucker sings over a cinematic, sweeping instrumental, both swelling intensely like a pot that’s about to boil over.
Directed by the band’s Carrie Brownstein, the video for “Say It Like You Mean It” centers on a distraught Smith-Cameron in a classy restaurant, downing martinis and flirting up a storm against her better judgment. “The video tells the story of a woman who’s lost all sense of what’s appropriate,” Brownstein adds in a press release. “Sick with the alienation that stems from existing in a disparate emotional state from the person or people closest to her, she grapples with debilitating loss, desires to be seen, and dares you to leave.”
