Slowdive are having one of the great seconds acts of our time, reforming after 20 years, becoming more popular than they ever were in the ’90s and making two great albums that stand up against their OG shoegaze classics. It was pure bliss on Thursday night at the band’s second of two shows at Webster Hall as oceans of sound emanated from the speakers.
The venue was as packed as I’ve ever seen it and the crowd woohoo’d as much for new songs “kisses” and “Sugar the Pill” as vintage tracks like “Alison” and “Catch the Breeze;” all of it sounded gorgeous. Rachel Goswell and Neil Halstead were also in fine vocal form, but it’s those waves of swirling, shimmering guitar that get you. They can still make a racket, too, like on the intense finish to “Souvlaki Space Station” as strobes matched the sonic maelstrom
The band switched up the setlist a little from Night 1, subbing out “Crazy for You” for “Slowdive” and “Sleep,” both of which were played for the first time on this North American tour. As usual on this tour, Slowdive closed out the main set with their cover of Syd Barrett’s “Golden Hair,” and then came back for a three-song encore of “the slab,” “Dagger,” and “40 Days.” Check out the full Night 2 setlist and video from the show below.
Drag Majesty are opening on this tour and their new EP features a duet with Rachel Goswell, “Vanity,” which finally got played live on Thursday night. Goswell was a goth in the ’80s and it was great to hear her belt it out in melodramatic style. You can watch video of that below as well.
You can also check out the setlist and full video from Slowdive’s first night at Webster Hall.
Slowdive and Drab Majesty play Philly tonight (9/29). All tour dates are below.
