It’s been a few years since the mental health organization Sounds of Saving launched their “Songs That Found Me at The Right Time” series, in which artists cover a song that “saved” them during a difficult moment. Now, the latest installment in the series has arrived, and it’s an up-beat, hard-hitting romp: Soul Glo has covered System of a Down’s 1998 track, “Soil.” Watch the performance below.
“We chose this song, chiefly, because it slaps,” the band’s Pierce Jordan explained in the video. “Soil” was originally included on SOAD’s self-titled debut album, and has been celebrated by many fans, including Jordan, for its ability to speak to the experience of depression and its depths.
“It’s always been one of my favorites, for a long time [it’s been in my] top 10, easy,” Jordan said. “ There’s a lot of crossover, just in what the song is about. It’s addressing men who are overwhelmed with their emotions, and [are] unable to really express or process the pain of their experience, and how all of those emotional byproducts can eat you alive.” Watch Soul Glo perform the song below.
Elsewhere in Soul Glo’s video for Sounds of Saving, Jordan was candid about his own struggles with mental health, sharing that “art is the only thing that keeps my desire to be here.” Explaining further, he said: “Being able to see the world through any given person’s eyes, out of the 6 billion people that exist here, the fact that nobody is exactly the same. It’s one of the consistently unfolding beauties of life that really makes it worth sticking around for. Everybody has their reason for continuing and I guess art is mine.”
The Soul Glo version of “Soil” captures the band’s electrifying live sound, which you can see yourself on their ongoing 2023 tour. The band is co-headlining with Zulu, and will continue playing shows across America through early October. Check out the full list of dates, and grab your tickets here.
The Sounds of Saving video was also made in partnership with the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (formerly known as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline), which offers 24/7 call, SMS, and chat support. Find out more here.
