Seeing Spiritualized on a Sunday is the best kind of church, where J. Spaceman (Jason Pierce) and his band dispense with any kind of sermonizing in favor of two hours of heavenly hymns that are both deeply soulful and at times blindingly psychedelic. His pulpit, as usual, is a swivelling office chair, sheets of music/lyrics in front of him and a trio of backup singers behind him. Opposite are two guitarists, including blazing longtime cohort Doggen Foster, plus a keyboardist, bassist and drummer who kept the congregation mesmerized through their set, which has remained constant on this visit, including “Soul on Fire,” “I’m Your Man,” “Here It Comes (The Road) Let’s Go,” and “Shine a Light.” When the mirrorball turned the whole room into a swirling sea of stars for “Damaged,” it was a religious experience.

This was the final date of Spiritualized’s East Coast headline run. After a couple weeks off they’ll hook up with Queens of the Stone Age for dates in the Southwest and West.
