After speaking to Spike Lee at the Toronto International Film Festival on Monday, all four members of Talking Heads — David Byrne, Jerry Harrison, Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz — headed to where it all began, New York City, to continue their promotional tour for A24’s 4K restoration of Stop Making Sense. Wednesday night they were at BAM’s Harvey Theater for an exclusive BAM members / patrons screening and Q&A. Maybe they’re just getting the hang of being around each other again, but in video clips they seem much more relaxed in Brooklyn than Toronto.
Q&A moderator John Heilemann of MSNBC kinda asked the question everyone wants to know – any chance of live shows again? — by asking why they never toured again after Stop Making Sense. “It was really sad to just say, ‘Okay, the movie is gonna tour for us. That’s it,’” Weymouth told Heilemann (via People). “I thought we could go on, we could go back to being a quartet. I thought we could do a million things. I thought we had a lot in us and we were so young to be retired at age 32…But now that’s in the past and we don’t care anymore.”
Harrison also said he wished Talking Heads had kept playing, and that they actually turned down an offer to play Live Aid in 1985, but added the pressure from Stop Making Sense made it feel like they had to top that if they did tour again. “There was a lost opportunity that would have been fun for all of us,” Harrison said.
At the end of the Q&A, Heilemann offered a thought to the crowd, “I think most people would love to see Talking Heads play again together,” which met by thunderous applause from the packed BAM Harvey Theater. When they applause died down, Frantz said, “Speaking personally, I’m just very happy. I have a feeling of great gratitude to be here tonight with my bandmates, and to have a fabulous audience watching the movie in a great theater with a great emcee interviewing us. I’m just happy right now in this moment.”
