The Grammy Museum is pleased to welcome four-time Grammy Award winner Taj Mahal and album producer John Simon for an intimate conversation in the museum’s 200-seat theater. Moderated by KCSM’s Chuy Valera, the conversation will discuss the making of Taj’s latest album, Savoy.
The Taj Mahal is rightfully known as a living legend for his contributions to popular music. With a voice as recognizable as Louis Armstrong, Ray Charles or Dr. John, Taj Mahal has fused his voice throughout his career Sounds of the Caribbean, Africa, traditional blues, and jazz pushed American music forward. He has received four of 16 Grammy nominations, inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame, received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Music Association and was recently awarded a star on the Walk of Fame in Memphis, Tennessee.
and SavoyTaj Mahal takes new directions in his musical journey, exploring classics from the American songbook with his good friend and acclaimed record producer John Simon, whose resume includes producing the band , Janis Joplin, Simon & Garfunkel, Leonard Cohen, Gordon Lightfoot and countless others. Savoy is the realization of a musical collaboration they’ve planned for decades, finally locking in studio time to make it happen in August 2022.
Recorded by some of San Francisco’s hottest musicians, the album is a loving throwback to the sound of the swing jazz big band era, and the title pays homage to the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem, where music was composed by Duke Created by Ellington, Louis Jordan, George Gershwin, and Lewis. Performed by a famous artist, Armstrong is now resurrected by the one and only Taj Mahal.
