So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.

Sometimes things feel positive and sometimes you feel a lot of rejection. This is my way of expressing that through a narrative of not being seen or appreciated by a person you were romantic with.”

TEENAGE FANCLUB – “BACK TO THE LIGHT”
Teenage Fanclub’s 12th album, Nothing Lasts Forever, is out September 22 via Merge and they’ve just shared another harmonious song from it. “I liked the idea of using being in a band as a metaphor for a personal relationship. They are not entirely dissimilar experiences. Like a few others on the album, this song has saxophone on it. First time we’ve had that since Songs From Northern Britain. Stephen Black (Sweet Baboo) played those parts; we really like the richness it brings to the song. Steve will be with us when we head out on tour in October in Europe.”

AL MENNE – “GRANDMA’S GARDEN”
Great Grandpa vocalist Al Menne is releasing their debut solo album, Freak Accident, in September, and the latest single is bright, layered folk track “Grandma’s Garden,” which features guitar from Meg Duffy of Hand Habits. “‘Grandma’s Garden’ is an over larking feeling of nostalgia,” Al says. “The remembrance of running through my grandparents’ pastures with my brothers sweeps into the feeling of not fitting into grown-up’s ideas of who I would be as a kid. The demo of this song is smaller and almost sweeter sounding which holds a place in my heart, but I’ve always loved songs that sonically and lyrically are at odds. This song feels like summer to me.”
—
KATIE VON SCHLEICHER – “MONTAGNARD PEOPLE”
“This one is very dear to me and has the kind of lyrics, relaxed tone & collaborative spirit I’d been chasing,” Katie von Schleicher says of her orchestrated new single, which features violn, viola, and bari and alto sax. —
WHITNEY – “KANSAS”
If Whitney’s electronic-leaning 2022 album SPARK was not your cup of tea, this new song is in more familiar, twangy territory.Say the band: “We started ‘Kansas’ back in 2017 at the beginning of the Forever Turned Around writing sessions. The initial idea saw a couple different mutations but eventually we fully rewrote it into the title track for LP2. At some point during tour rehearsals in 2022 we decided to put the original unfinished ‘Kansas’ in the set to see how people would respond and it quickly became a centerpiece. So in March of this year we finished writing and recording ‘Kansas’ as it was originally imagined and we’re thrilled to finally release it.”

DEEPER – “FAME”
“‘Fame’ is a sentimental favorite of ours,” say Chicago’s Deeper. “To us, it’s the sound of ‘Careful!’. It embodies the conversations in your mind after feeling you made a mistake, and the thoughts linger in your head afterward. The lyricism is built on repeated mantras, and the instrumentation builds the tension. This is the first song from the record that embodies a more experimental side we’re excited to showcase.” Deeper’s first album for Sub Pop, Carefull!, is out September 8.
