austin goth dream pop Angel Temple have been making music for over six years, starting with their Yingshi and Frustrated 2018 EP, now the band – whose guitarist Cole Tucker also plays in Metallica ghost— released their first full-length album, endless pursuit, by running for cover. The album was influenced by the dreams of frontman Bre Morell, who explained: “Sometimes a beautiful dream can creep over a nightmare, and that inspired a lot of my writing, especially when I was a teenager. or a future life in some kind of parallel universe. I’ve been thinking about these dreams for over 16 years and they still haunt me.”
To celebrate the LP release, the members of Temple Of Angels also tell us about some of the musical (and other non-musical) influences that shaped the album, including “Cure”, “Chameleon”, “Sunday”, Mulholland Drive, Cohabitation and so on.stream endless pursuit Below, read on for a list of them.
The Influence Behind the Temple of Angels endless pursuit
The Way to Heal – “Open”
Reminds me of The Cure’s “Open” live video on their website hope There are tours almost every day. Shots of friends and couples outside the venue dancing/kissing/laughing while the intro to the song is playing. I think it captures a perfect moment of anticipation and joy versus the contrast of the song’s lyrics about a dreaded night – both feelings I wanted to emulate on our album. – Avery Burton (guitar)
synthesizer
In previous versions we didn’t add a synthesizer to the mix of sounds, although most people think we did. This time, towards the end of the recording process, we thought it would add more texture and good layers of sound, so Philip Odom brought in his talents to help us integrate the instrument. – Cole Tucker (guitar)
Sunday – “You’re Not the Only One I Know”
It’s one of the few songs that I can listen to for hours on end and find something new to like each time… I’m totally obsessed with this song as we’re writing/recording it, I’m sure Its influence seeps into some of these songs. Her writing style and her tender, intimate vocal delivery are absolutely flawless. – Bray Morell (lead vocals)
living together
I think Avery, Patrick, and myself (Cole) living in the same house really helped with the songwriting on this album. We were able to get together constantly and exchange ideas with each other at any time. Soaking in each other’s influences and discovering new music and experiences together really helped to bring a unified yet diverse sound to the album. – Cole Tucker (guitar)
lighter touch
We’ve gotten stuck in overlapping genres like goth, post punk, shoe gazing, etc. in the past. There’s plenty of pop/dreampop in the songwriting and sound of the album. While we’re always compared to bands like the Cocteau Twins with such a broad sound, this time around we collectively looked to bands like The Sundays and The Cure for inspiration. While paring back the effects, our sound will always be a layered band. – Cole Tucker (guitar)
Texas music scene
The Texas landscape has always inspired people to write more and write better. Friends and bands I can attribute to are Victor Gutierrez (Impalers/Fugitive), Mike Sharp (Hatred Surge), Cole Tucker (TOA), and our bands in Narrow Head, Nosferatu, Stunted Youth, legends Iron Age, and Power Trip All my friends, too many to list them all. I love my friends. – Avery Burton (guitar)
Chameleon – bridge script
I always want to pay homage to the guitar bands that I enjoy and listen to every day. So I think the album and the band had a big impact on the sound of the album and the band as a whole. – Cole Tucker (guitar)
Mulholland Drive
The beautiful, dreamy yet straightforwardly horrific nature of all of Lynch’s work has always resonated with me, and this film is a perfect example of that. Much of what I write in this project is taken from my dreams/nightmares, which have a similar unsettling, anxious feeling that I often try to convey in my music. – Bray Morell (lead vocals)
