The Postal Service and Death Cab for Cutie have been celebrating the 20th anniversaries of Give Up and Transatlanticism this year on a Ben Gibbard-forward double-bill arena tour this year, and in tribute The Beths and Car Seat Headrest have each contributed covers to a new 7″ single.
The Beths have had a front row seat to the Postal Service/Death Cab tour as openers on part of it, and they have covered Give Up‘s “Brand New Colony” with help from fellow New Zealanders Pickle Darling. They transform the original, with its 8-bit video game hook, into a winsome-yet-widescreen folk rock duet.
Car Seat Headrest, who opened for Death Cab at Hollywood Bowl in 2019, take Transatlanticism‘s “We Looked Like Giants” and switch out the original’s swaying swagger for a little more propulsive thrust.
Fun fact: both “Brand New Colony” and “We Looked Like Giants” are the penultimate tracks on their respective albums. You can listen to the covers and the originals below.
This 7″ is out now via Sub Pop.
The Beths, who open for Postal Service/Death Cab at Hollywood Bowl on Friday (10/13), bring their fall tour to Brooklyn next week for a three-night stand at Music Hall of Williamsburg on October 17-19.
