The Goats have announced their new album, jenny from thebes.Purported sequel to 2002 long live west texas, which was released on October 27 via Merge Records and includes lead single “Clean Slate.” Play the track below.
According to a press release, jenny from thebes is “a story about individuals and society, about safety and sanctuary, and those who choose to provide care when no one else will.” That person, of course, is Jenny, a longtime GOAT fan who will learn from long live west texas cut with her name and “straight six” Jam Eater Blues and “Night Light,” the track that appears on side two Extraordinary youth.
Produced by Grammy Award winner Trina Shoemaker, the 12-track project includes contributions from Bully’s Alicia Bognanno (guitar) and Matt Douglas (horn and string arrangement). Kathy Valentine and Matt Nathanson of Go-Go also provide backing vocals.
As John Darnielle explained in a statement, “Clean Slate” set the stage for Jenny’s story. “People like to hedge their bets with terms like ‘concept album’, but let’s be clear, this is a rock opera about a woman named Jenny who buys a Kawasaki as far away as possible from the town. The shoulders are too long,” he said. “‘Clean Slate’ sets the scene: this is the house Jenny rents; these people come here when they need a place to live; this is where she is in becoming a different keyholder than she was in the past .”
jenny from thebes follow last year’s bleedingDaniel discussed this in an interview with result. In a solo sit-down, he recounts making his debut in Rian Johnson’s film poker face. In support of the new album, The Mountain Goats will be on a summer and fall tour. See dates below and get tickets here.
