It’s been five years since the last Star Wars movie — 2019’s not-so-great The Rise of Skywalker — but Disney has just announced the next film will feature two very popular streaming series characters making the hyperspace leap to the big screen. The Mandalorian & Grogu will go into production later this year with series co-creator Jon Favreau directing.
“I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created,” says Favreau. “The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.” Favreau will also produce the film, alongside his Star Wars creative partner Dave Filoni, and Kathleen Kennedy.
There were rumors that a film about Daisy Ridley’s Star Wars sequels character, Rey, would be the next film, but that has been put on the backburner. Disney notes that there are also upcoming Star Wars films to be helmed by Filoni (who is also working on the second season of Ashoka), Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, and James Mangold.
