The Mars Volta began their fall tour supporting their 2022 self-titled album, their first in a decade, earlier this month, and stopped in NYC on Friday night (9/22) for a BrooklynVegan-presented show at Kings Theatre. Like when they came through NYC last year, they played only a couple of songs off their new album — “Graveyard Love” and “Shore Story” on Friday night — and Cedric Bixler Zavala explained that they hadn’t played more new material because keyboardist Leo Genovese had to be in Colombia for a prior engagement; Federico Peña was filling in for him. Fill in member or not, they were super tight, and the show looked and sounded amazing.
Teri Gender Bender of Le Butcherettes is opening all shows on this tour, Friday night’s included, and you can see pictures by Mathieu Bredeau, The Mars Volta’s setlist, and attendee-taken video below.
A new documentary about Cedric and Omar Rodríguez-López, Omar and Cedric: If This Ever Gets Weird, premieres in October.
