Tomb Mold & Afterbirth played The Meadows (pics, setlist)

After having the show moved from Saint Vitus due to the venue’s current temporary closure, Tomb Mold headlined their first of two shows at The Meadows on Friday night (2/23). It was a packed crowd and the first time in five years that the Canadian death metal band had been in the United States, which also meant it was our first chance to hear songs from their amazing new album The Enduring Spirit played live. And they totally delivered. They were super tight, with a superhuman drummer-singer Max Klebanoff and some insane riffers, including the ponytailed, mosutached, Live-tour-shirt-wearing, headless-guitar playing Derrick Vella, who to many is the face of the band (and who has also been active in recent years with two Dream Unending recordings and his contributions to the new Outer Heaven album).

Friday’s two-band bill also represented 2/55 of our Top Albums of 2023, so it goes without saying that we were also really excited for the also-rare opening set by psychedelic Long Island brutal death metal band Afterbirth (who Tomb Mold were also excited to be playing with). Frontman Will Smith’s signature gurgling vocals and animated stage presence are one of the 7 Natural Wonders of NY, and he’s the perfect accompaniment to the serious playing from the other three members of the band who are all original members from the ’90s. We hope they return to the stage sooner than later.
