Canton, SD-born singer/songwriter Tyler Halverson makes self-described “Amerijuana Music,” and in case the pun isn’t obvious, he knows how to infuse his folk/country/rock songs with a little bit of psychedelia. When I saw him at the most recent edition of Honky Tonkin’ In Queens, Tyler and his band broke out into some dazed-and-confused jams that were just as great as his singalong choruses. His harmonica-fueled folk rock songs are of the Bob Dylan/Neil Young variety, and one of his singles is called “Mac Miller.” He cites Boyz II Men, Taking Back Sunday, and The Used as influences, alongside the more identifiable ones like Garth Brooks, George Strait, and Hayes Carll. To quote his bio, “Tyler Halverson isn’t just any cowboy.”
Tyler doesn’t have an album yet, but he’s put out a dozen singles since 2021, including today’s “Tiffany Blue,” a duet with Carter Faith. It’s a lovely ballad that Tyler says is “about that time when you think you found love, and just wind up leaving lost,” and it’s yet another great single. You can check out the song and its Wales Toney-directed video below, and if you haven’t heard Tyler’s other singles yet, check some of those out below too. This guy has been on a roll and I’d imagine he’s only gonna keep rising.
As we witnessed at Honky Tonkin’ In Queens, Tyler and his band are also great live, and you’ve got a bunch of chances to see them in the next few months. All upcoming dates are listed below.
And speaking of Honky Tonkin’ In Queens, the next one is December 2 at Gottscheer Hall with Elsmere, KY’s Jeremy Pinnell and Fort Worth, TX’s Cory Cross.
