U2‘s 25-show run opening billion-dollar high tech Las Vegas venue Sphere begins tonight, and to celebrate they’ve got a new single. Produced by Steve Lillywhite and Jacknife Lee, “Atomic City” is jangly in almost a Smiths way, though the band cite Blondie’s work with Giorgio Moroder was an inspiration. “It’s a love song to our audience,” says Bono. “’where you are is where I’ll be’.”
The video was shot on Vegas strip, recalling “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” which they filmed on the exact same Fremont Street location 35 years ago. You can watch that below.
The “Atomic City” video (and song) aslo features drummer Larry Mullen Jr, who is sitting out The Sphere run as he recovers from surgery. Bram van den Berg is filling in behind the kit. “[Larry’s] feeling good,” Bono told CBS Mornings in a segment about their Sphere shows. “And he can see a way back to fitness, but it’s going to take time.”
You can watch that CBS segment, where they show off what the Sphere can do, inside and out, below.
