It was a big year for raucous Atlanta punks Upchuck, who released a new Ty Segall-produced album, Bite the Hand That Feeds, and toured with Faye Webster. Their album made Be Your Own Pet singer Jemima Pearl’s Best of 2023 list, and she said, “I was lucky to catch Upchuck at SXSW this year and was blown away by their music and performance. I was looking forward to the release of their full length, and it exceeded my high expectations. I especially love the song ‘Freaky.’ Can’t wait to see what else they do.” Listen to Bite the Hand That Feeds below.
Speaking of Best Of lists, here’s Upchuck guitarist Hoff with his Top 10 Albums of 2023, which include Snõõper, OSEES, OFF!, and more. Check out his list and commentary below.
1. Super Snõõper – Snõõper
Super Snõõper is an energetic blast with not a dull moment, nearly verbatim to a live set, all you need is an alien puppet for your living room and its the complete experience.
2. Witness Marks – Flat Worms
Witness Marks is filled with echos and tricks that will keep you entertained for the duration of the record.
3.Vangas – Vangas
Vangas self-titled serves as their debut to the LP format, dragging with it their lathe-cut 7”s and giving it a proper reintroduction in a studio environment. This record is gut-wrenching with moments that are hard to sit through but captivating enough to bear with. Emotional moments hidden in a super harsh record.
4. The Beast/Final Touch – Bazooka
The Beast/Final Touch serves as a single for a 7” that has yet-to-be released, that i am excited for the public to hear.
5. Versiones Talegueras – Prison Affair
Versiones Talegueras are a remixed versions of Prison Affair tracks that are quite interesting takes.
6. FLSD-EP – OFF!
FLSD-EP has a warning of “There is another side, We are not Alone” as the intro track to this EP which served as a Record Store Day release. I found myself playing the single version of this track over and over until the whole EP was released, and it serves as a nice expansion upon the Free LSD record.
7. Intercepted Message – OSEES
Osees have quite the constant and prolific output, although their previous record strayed a bit, Intercepted Message serves as a great continuation of their record Protean Threat. And I have enjoyed the numerous live sessions that have been put out in between these releases as well.
8.Teeth – Die Spitz
After seeing them live in Austin at SXSW, as well as instigating the mosh at Hotel Vegas for our set, I’ve listened, and Teeth serves as a great debut record for Die Spitz and was paired with some great music videos.
9. Australia Stops – C.O.F.F.I.N
Australia Stops is straight up Australian Rock n’Roll. Ben’s Voice cuts through just as hard as his snare hits.
10. MISFIT – Kent Osborne
In a year of constant output of singles this is Kent’s longest length project, and melds together a-lot of styles with very abrasive rap. If you like streaming his music, you’ll really like it live, very commanding stage presence with live drums!
