Screamo bands Massa Nera and Quiet Fear recently released their great split LP Quatro Vientos // Cinco Soles, which alternates between the band’s three respective songs and culminates in a collaborative song between the two bands, and Massa Nera have now made a video for one of their contributions, “Division.” The band says:
When we were writing “Division,” three of us had relatives who were battling cancer, hence ‘division.” The title has a triple-meaning: Division as in unregulated cellular division; as in removing a part from the whole; as in a disagreement that produces tension.
By the time Quatro Vientos // Cinco Soles, all three relatives had died. This video is a way of processing those losses via the exploration of fraudulent forms of healing (a motif in the lyrics) with an emphasis on the psychiatric and religious. The last section is a requiem, I suppose. My uncle grew up near the beach in South Jersey and had a deep love for the ocean.
I used footage from already-existing videos for the entire thing. Each source of footage was downloaded from YouTube, re-rendered so that the aspect ratios were consistent, and then datamoshed using Zwobot. From there, they were edited together in a manner that hopefully gave the video a sense of movement.
The video makes its premiere here and you can check it out below. Read our review of the split.
