Pulp brought their reunion tour to North America this weekend for Mexico City’s Corona Capital festival. Amongst classics like “Disco 2000,” “Do You Remember the First Time?,” “Sorted for E’s & Wizz” and, of course, “Common People,” they played a brand new song, “Background Noise.” Jarvis told the crowd they had a new song and wanted to play it for them, and dedicated it to his girlfriend who was in the crowd.
Set to a girl group beat, “Background Noise” is another of his nuanced looks at relationships: “Love turns into background noise / Like this ringing in my ears / Like the buzzing of the fridge / You only notice when it disappears.” Watch Pulp perform that, and check out their full Corona Capital setlist, below.
Is this reunion becoming more than just concerts? Pulp debuted “Hymn of the North” back in July at a show in their hometown of Sheffield, but that was a old song they’d never recorded. The band’s last album was 2001’s We Love Life. There have also been no US dates announced yet, but Pulp have festival dates through summer 2024 so, they’re not stopping anytime soon.
Corona Capital 2023 is a very Britpop lineup, also including Blur, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, The Chemical Brothers and more.
