pulpTheir reunion tour hits their hometown of Sheffield over the weekend with two big shows at the Utilita Arena. Both shows featured hits, deep cuts and featured Sheffield compatriot and former Pulp guitarist Richard Hawley, but there was something special about the second night’s finale Stuff – an unreleased song, “Hymn Of The North.”
“I can assure you that no one has ever heard this song except us on this stage,” Jarvis told the audience. “Actually it’s a lie. It’s a song — a version of it, a version of a guy called Simon Stephens that appears in a play. It’s called Northern Hymn.” We’re in the North, So we thought you should give it a listen first, okay? “
Sitting next to keyboardist Candida Doyle, Jarvis continued: “We had some lively discussions about whether or not we were actually going to try to play it. There could be a lot of problems with that – I Playing the piano, just for a while.” Start. But Candida will help us correct our mistakes. “
“Hymn Of The North” is a lovely, expansive Scott Walker-esque ballad, which you can listen to below. Hopefully this gets a studio recording as well.

Pulp made an appearance at this weekend’s Latitude Festival, then spent two nights at the Eventim Apollo in London, wrapping up their UK tour for the month. Their only live date was at Mexico City’s Corona Capital music festival in November, but Jarvis told the BBC, “This is the country that made Pulp famous, where we sold the most records and got to know each other. The most people. I’m sure we’ll probably play elsewhere in the world, but it seems appropriate to do it here first.” Stay tuned.
In other Britpop news, Blur’s new album is due out this week, and Damon Albarn doesn’t think an Oasis reunion is too far off.
