Katie Crutchfield’s indie folk project Waxahatchee has announced a new album, Tigers Blood, out March 22nd via her new label home ANTI-. Along with the news comes lead single “Right Back to It,” as well as a run of US tour dates in 2024.
Crutchfield wrote most of the songs on Tigers Blood during what she calls a “hot hand spell,” while on tour near the end of 2022. She reunited with producer Brad Cook, who also produced her 2020 album Saint Cloud, and welcomed onboard some new collaborators including MJ Lenderman and Spencer Tweedy. Pre-orders are ongoing.
“Right Back to It” sees Crutchfield lean into her country side, singing alongside an arpeggiated banjo jangle courtesy of Phil Cook as Lenderman joins her in harmony on the choruses. On it, Crutchfield reflects on maintaining a long-term romantic relationship, and the bittersweet beauty of building a partnership that can outlast your worries: “I get ahead of myself/ Bracing for a bombshell,” she sings. “But you come to me on a fault line/ Deep inside a goldmine.”
“I wrote it backstage at Wolf Trap when I was on tour opening for Jason Isbell and Sheryl Crow,” Crutchfield says of “Right Back to It.” “I’m really interested in writing love songs that are gritty and unromantic. I wanted to make a song about the ebb and flow of a longtime love story. I thought it might feel untraditional but a little more in alignment with my experience to write about feeling insecure or foiled in some way internally, but always finding your way back to a newness or an intimacy with the same person.”
Waxahatchee’s 2024 tour dates begin on April 18th in Kansas City, continuing on through September. A ticket pre-sale is set for Wednesday, January 10th (use code SPOTLIGHT), with a public on-sale following on Friday, January 12th.
Waxahatchee’s last album was 2020’s Saint Cloud, one of the best records of that year. Since then, she’s shared collaborations with Bright Eyes, Wynonna, and her real-life partner Kevin Morby.
