Wes Anderson‘s adaptation of Roald Dahl‘s short story “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” will be out via Netflix on September 27 after making its world premiere at the 2023 Venice International Film Festival.
The 37-minute short feature, which Anderson both directed and wrote the screenplay for, stars Benedict Cumberbatch in the titular role, and the cast also includes Ralph Fiennes, Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley, Rupert Friend, and Richard Ayoade. Here’s the official synopsis: “A beloved Roald Dahl story about a rich man who learns about a guru who can see without using his eyes and then sets out to master the skill in order to cheat at gambling.”
This is Wes Anderson’s second dip into the Dahl catalogue, his first being 2009’s stop-motion-animated The Fantastic Mr Fox. A trailer for The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar has not been released yet, but you can check out the poster below.
It’s also good to see Anderson doesn’t hold a grudge against Ayoade, who shares a love of corduroy suits and a very similar visual directorial style (as seen in Vampire Weekend videos and his feature debut, Submarine).
This will be the second release for Anderson this year — Asteroid City came out earlier this summer and is now streaming on Peacock.
