There’s always at least one show every Yo La Tengo Hanukkah run that seems extra special, and Saturday night (Night 3) was one of those. They got Kurt Wagner to bring the Lambchop big band, complete with horns, up from Nashville to open the show for a set that included “Up With People,” “The Man Who Loved Beer,” “My Face Your Ass,” and more.
Lambchop also joined Yo La Tengo for half their set, with William Tyler, Paul Niehaus, and Matt Swanson coming back out for other songs, while Matt McCaughan was on a second drum kit the whole show. YLT’s set included “Night Falls on Hoboken,” “This Stupid World,” “I Should’ve Known Better,” “I Heard You Looking,” covers of The Fugs, Bonzo Dog Band, Goffin/King and more.
For the encore, the night’s comedian, Dina Hashem, joined the band on drums for a cover of T. Rex’s “20th Century Boy” (their second Bolan cover in as many nights). Then The Dictators‘ Andy Chernoff came out to sing and play bass on his band’s “Next Big Thing” and “Loyola,” before bringing the night to a close with Flamin’ Groovies’ “Slow Death.”

DJ King Joe made the Night 3 mix CD, while Miss Christina Ginger was the post-show DJ. Proceeds from the night went to Advocates for Children.
There are five shows left. Tickets are currently sold out, but the band often release some day-of show or during the week, and it’s worth checking back if you’re really trying to go.
