Zayn returns with a single titled “Love Like This,” his first new music since 2021.
With lyrics about the uncertain but exhilarating leap of faith one must take when committing to a relationship, “Love Like This” is an uplifting pop-bop track. Soft harmonies and break-beat beats underlie Zayn’s vocals, and his lines describe how he “can’t go back” to life without a new love. As savvy One Direction fans pointed out, it’s even possible that Zayn paid tribute to his former band, singing, “Whether it’s left or right, your direction is in my heart.”
“Love Like This” also comes with a music video featuring a stoic Zayn on a motorcycle, brooding wistfully across the cityscape. Directed by Ivana Bolling and Frank Bolling, the film was shot in New York. Watch the video below.
Zayn first teased “Love Like This” on Instagram in June, swiping down his page and sharing a brief sample of the song. He then shared more clips, which quickly sparked anticipation among legions of fans…one of whom was another former One Direction member, Liam Payne, who commented that “this already sounds amazing”.
The song, released in its entirety on Friday, July 21, marks Zayn’s debut album since signing with Mercury Records last month. It also marks Zayn’s first new original track since his 2021 album, no one is listening. Last year, the 30-year-old singer shared a cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Angel” in honor of the guitarist’s 80th birthday.
What’s next for Zahn is musically uncertain, though his signing with Mercury and this new single are positive signs that more may be on the way in the near future.As for his non-music endeavors, Zahn will star in an upcoming animated film 10 livesAnd Bill Nye, Simon Ashley and others. The film is scheduled to premiere in 2024.
