Brian Griffin, the British photographer who shot iconic album cover photos for Depeche Mode, Echo & the Bunnymen, The Psychedelic Furs and more, has died. He was 75. “It is with a heavy heart that I announce that my dear friend and business partner Brian Griffin passed away peacefully in his sleep,” Griffin’s buisness partner, Vaughn George, wrote. “I am heartbroken but I will cherish every conversation, the time we spent together and all the wonderful experiences. Rest peacefully my friend.”
Born in Birmingham, UK in 1948, Griffin attended Manchester Polytechnic in the late ’60s and early ’70s where he studied photography. His striking, often witty, visual style would soon get him lots of work in the music industry, particularly in the punk/post-punk/new wave world. He shot the covers for Depeche Mode’s first five albums, including 1982’s A Broken Frame, which Time Magazine named Photograph of the Decade in 1990.
Griffin also shot the cover photos for Echo & The Bunnymen’s first four albums, Billy Idol‘s Rebel Yell, Siouxsie & The Banshees‘ “Dazzle” single, Elvis Costello‘s Goodbye Cruel World and Spike, The Psychedelic Furs‘ Mirror Moves, and many more.
Rest in peace, Brian.
