After teasing it with a commercial that ran during the Grammy awards, Kacey Musgraves has announced her fifth album, Deeper Well, due out on May 15 via Interscope/MCA Nashville. She co-produced it with regular collaborators Daniel Tashian and Ian Fitchuk, and recorded much of it at Electric Lady studios, where, according to a press release, she was “inspired by the energy of New York City’s Greenwich Village and its rich musical history.” “I was seeking some different environmental energy,” she says, “and Electric Lady has the best mojo. Great ghosts.”
Speaking to Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, Kacey said, “I felt this pull to go to New York to create there and was able to somehow tap into all this space, this good negative space. I think there was something kind of cool about creating in a place where… So every day I would walk to the studio, walk through Washington Square Park, and it smells like weed and piss and pizza. There’s people talking, there’s musicians over here, and there’s skateboarders and there’s reggae blasting, and I don’t know, it’s just like it’s on 10. And then you get to the studio and I think you take a little bit of these things with you. It’s like osmosis. When the outer canvas is so maximalistic, I think it’s easier to go to a minimalistic place in your mind versus I think you could make a different record if you were stay on a really desert, in a desert somewhere where there’s no one and there’s nothing going on.”
The first single is the title track, and you can watch the accompanying video, directed by Hannah Lux Davis, below. “Sometimes you reach a crossroads,” Kacey says. “Winds change direction. What you once felt drawn to doesn’t hold the same allure.” She adds, “you get blown off course but eventually find your footing and forage for new inspiration, new insight and deeper love somewhere else.”
