After cancelling a show in Bologna midway through December due to illness, Patti Smith returned to the stage for a few US shows at the end of the month to celebrate her 77th birthday, including two at Brooklyn Steel on December 29 and 30. She was joined by her band — Lenny Kaye (who recently celebrated his own 77th birthday on 12/27), Tony Shanahan, Jay Dee Daugherty, and her son Jackson Smith — for the shows, and her daughter Jesse Paris Smith also came out on both nights for the encore’s final song, “People Have the Power,” and for “Dancing Barefoot” on night two.
Patti stuck to the same setlist on both nights, which included a cover of Dylan’s “Masters of War,” but as night two fell on her actual birthday, December 30, she was presented with a cake and had “Happy Birthday” sung to her between “Nine” and “Dancing Barefoot.” See pictures from night one by Sachyn Mital, along with the setlist and full set video from both nights below.
