Dinosaur Jr are no strangers to bringing fellow indie rock legends on stage with them, like when they just brought out Kim Deal and Lee Ranaldo at their Brooklyn residency in December, or when they brought out Kevin Shields in London in November, and now Stereogum points out that they just did it again at the Portland, OR stop of their Where You Been 30th anniversary tour, where Pavement’s Stephen Malkmus joined the band to play “Kracked” from 1987’s You’re Living All Over Me. Malkmus took over on lead vocals and did dual lead guitar with J Mascis on the song’s shredding solo, as Mascis took a backseat to his own song. He channelled his inner J Mascis-style lazy drawl, and he sounded pretty great doing it.
Dinosaur Jr and Pavement are both longtime admirers of each other–J Mascis has covered “Range Life” and Pavement included “In A Jar” on an influences playlist for Apple Music–but this seems like a rare collaboration. Watch video of the special moment below.
Dinosaur Jr also brought out The Dandy Warhols’ Peter Holmström, whose band Sun Atoms opened the show, for “Just Like Heaven.”
Meanwhile, J Mascis has a new solo album called What Do We Do Now arriving in February.
