Drummer, composer and The Trap Set podcaster Joe Wong has announced a new album, Mere Survival, which will be out February 2. The album features contributions from Mary Timony (Helium, Ex Hex), Matt Cameron (Soundgarden), Nate Mendel (Foo Fighters, Sunny Day Real Estate), Jim Keltner (John Lennon, George Harrison, Bob Dylan), Money Mark (Beastie Boys), Anna Waronker (that dog.), Craig Wedren (Shudder to Think), Joey Waronker (Beck, REM) and a 30-piece orchestra, and was mixed by Flaming Lips collaborator Dave Fridmann.
The first single from the album is “Into Nothing,” swirling slice of psychedelic orch-pop featuring Mary Timony, Matt Cameron, and that orchestra. “’Into Nothing’ is about the futility of legacy building given the suicidal nature of our species,” says Wong. “It resonates with a larger theme of the album–the same instincts that kept humanity alive for the majority of its existence are now leading us towards self annihilation.”
